"What's this called again?"

"A party. Pahr--teeeee", one of the bystanders said, drawing the last syllable out to be obnoxious, at least until Melinda reached out and bopped her on the head.

"Ow! Lindy, that hurt..."

"Oh sorry, guess I'm not really used to having these 'arm' things yet. Is your, um, hair feeling alright?"

"Is that what it's called? I gotta say, I never paid attention in class when we learned about the anatomy of these things. I'm just here for the experience, ya know?"

"Yeah," Melinda nodded. A lot of the shapeshifters she studied with didn't care about the background of what they were learning the forms of, as long as they could turn into something nifty.

It was rather lucky that their exploration group had stumbled upon the ruins, actually- after the floods had washed the Earth's surface clean of humanity, beings such as hers were allowed to flourish in much greater numbers. However, there was something mysterious, alluring, even charming about the world that preceded their life. Moments such as these when they could literally experience bits and pieces of the past were rare, and precious.

The water around them shimmered with arcane energy as the creatures' collective presence held both their forms and their surroundings together.

"Ready?" Melinda turned to the rest of her class. "I'm gonna turn it on."

A few nodded in assent, while the rest simply closed their eyes in anticipation of what was about to happen next. Rather clumsily, Melinda reached forward and flicked a few switches, before calming leaning back in her chair.

The music that followed may as well have just been the sweetest sound in the world.
