*sigh* The AKS-74U is not an SMG, it's an assault rifle.

AKS-74U is actually classified as a "carbine." Carbine is a shortened version of a rifle. But the guns role fills many roles like that of a submachine gun.

The difference between a SMG from an assault rifle is its caliber e.g: Calibers such as 5.56mm NATO, and 7.62x39 are common assault rifle calibers whilst SMG's use 9mm bullets, in a way smg's use pistol ammo.

Well, the AS VAL uses a 9mm round (9x39mm), but it's an assault rifle. Also, the Thompson-series SMGs are, rather famously, chambered for .45 ACP, decidedly not a 9mm round.

Then again, you are right about SMGs using pistol cartridges.

@mofumofunya The only smh that I know that it was the pioneer in to use pistol cartridges (awas the MP 40 (Maschinenpistole 40) used by the nazi Germany, however that nowadays you have so many models like the FNAB-43, Halcon M-1943, the Uzi pistol as well as the normal Uzi gun, the Bizon SMG, Beretta Model 38 and so on :).

Addendum: nowadays submachine guns have been largely replaced by assault rifles, which have a greater effective range and are capable of penetrating the helmets and body armor used by modern infantrymen. However, submachine guns are still used by military special forces and police SWAT teams for Close Quarters Battle (CQB) because they're "a pistol caliber weapon that's easy to control, and less likely to over-penetrate the target.

There are some inconsistencies in the classification of submachine guns. According with the British Commonwealth sources often refer to SMGs as "machine carbines" while other sources refer to SMGs as "machine pistols" because they fire pistol-caliber ammunition, for example, the MP-40 and MP5, where "MP" stands for Maschinenpistole ("machine pistol" in German)

Also, SMGs have always used pistol cartridges. The very first SMG was the MP18, first put into service in 1918 and chambered for 9x19mm Parabellum.

@mofumofunya which one would you use if you were in a special ops team? (it can be either police special forces or elite forces from military around the world)
